Single use plastic products in Shefford

Here at Shefford Skip Hire we always recycle as much of your waste as possible, however, there is always more that can be done to improve the environment that we all need to survive. For this reason we have listed the six R's below to help our Shefford customers think about their habits when it comes to buying and ultimately, disposing of certain materials around the home or garden.

The 6 Rs - Sustainability and Recycling

The term the 6 Rs can be applied to the design of new products or when a product is finished with, used up or no longer wanted. Here are some questions to prompt 6-Rs thinking:

  • Reduce - Can the amount of material used be reduced? Can the material be bought locally to reduce product miles?
  • Reuse - Can the material be reused for another purpose once a product is finished with?
  • Recycle - Can the material be disposed of correctly so that it can be recycled?
  • Rethink - Can the way a product is made be redesigned so that less material is used?
  • Refuse - Refusing to use the material could be a consideration; could a material that is sustainable be used instead?
  • Repair - When a product is broken, can it be repaired rather than discarded?

By considering the six R's, we can all make a positive difference to the mountains of damaging waste that find their way into land fills in Bedfordshire each and every year.

Reducing product miles to help the environment

So what are product miles?

Product miles are the total distance produce is transported from its place of growth or production to the place of consumption here in Shefford. The concept of product miles is widely used in food production where there is a push by consumers for locally produced products.

Why are product miles important?

We often wonder why we ship apples 10,000 miles from the US when we have perfectly good varieties grown here at home. A recent study highlighted that even at the height of the of the UK apple growing season the majority of Shefford supermarkets were selling apples imported from overseas.

We often see a similar case to food miles, could be made for manufactured products, in that why manufacture goods thousands of miles away if we can produce better quality products at comparable prices in the UK, and have a positive impact on CO2 emissions and global warming. We are losing manufacturing jobs all the time in Bedfordshire but, with a little creativity and ingenuity, we can still be competitive locally in the UK. It is not a case of being anti foreign production, it is more a case of just thinking it makes more sense to produce locally in Shefford where it is possible and practical. It is also better for our local economy.

Below are just a few examples of the product miles that form part of a typical shopping basket of fresh food bought in Shefford. No wonder they have a negative impact on the environment!

  • Apples from America - 10,000 miles
  • Potatoes from Israel - 2,187 miles
  • Tomatoes from Saudi Arabia - 3,086 miles

Single use plastic is a real problem

Single use plastics, or disposable plastics, are used only once before they are thrown away or recycled. These items are things like plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, fizzy drink and water bottles and most food packaging. Typical examples can be seen for sale all over Shefford.

We produce roughly 300 million tons of plastic each year and half of it is disposable! World wide only 10-13% of plastic items are recycled. The nature of petroleum based disposable plastic makes it difficult to recycle and they have to add new virgin materials and chemicals to it to do so. Additionally there are a limited number of items that recycled plastic can be used.

Petroleum based plastic is not biodegradable and usually goes into a landfill where it is buried or it gets into the water and finds its way into the ocean. Although plastic will not biodegrade, which means decompose into natural substance like soil, it will degrade by breaking down into tiny particles after many years. In the process of breaking down, it releases toxic chemicals from the additives that were used to shape and harden the plastic which make their way into our food and water supply.

These toxic chemicals are now being found in our bloodstream and the latest research has found them to disrupt the Endocrine system which can cause cancer, infertility, birth defects, impaired immunity and many other serious ailments.

We produce hundreds of millions of tons of plastic every year, most of which cannot be recycled. It is clear that we need to use less plastic, move towards environmentally sustainable products and services and come up with technology that recycles plastic more efficiently.

What are world leaders doing?

The good news is that Canada will ban single use plastics as early as 2021, surely a positive step forward for the environment!

The prime minister said the specific items to be banned will be determined based on a science based review, but the government is considering items such as water bottles, plastic bags and straws. The simple reason is that single use plastics present a serious climate change hazard.

The prime minister said his government is drawing inspiration from the European parliament, which voted overwhelmingly in March to impose a wide ranging ban on single use plastics to counter pollution from discarded items that end up in waterways and fields. Legislatures of the EU member states must vote on the measure before it takes effect.

He went on to state that it was difficult trying to explain dead whales washing up on beaches around the world, their stomachs jam packed with plastic bags.

Plastic waste: A problem for all of us! Even in Shefford!

How often do we go to the beach and have to search out a patch of sand that is not littered with straws, Styrofoam or bottles? Plastic netting used to be the main source of danger to our coastal wildlife, but the single use plastic products are so numerous in number now that they are getting everywhere.

As less than 10% of plastic used in Canada gets recycled. The government said that one million birds and over 100,000 sea mammals worldwide are injured or die each year when they mistake plastic for food or become entangled in it.

The EU measure would affect a range of plastic products for which reasonable alternatives exist, from straws to earbuds, starting in 2021.

Single use must be sustainable

Disposable utensils would not be completely off limits, but the EU measure calls for them to be made of sustainable materials when possible. The EU legislation also sets a goal of having 90% of plastic bottles recycled by 2025 and of halving the litter from the 10 items that turn up in oceans most often.

The EU estimated the changes will cost the economy between 259 to 695 million euros a year.

China made the decision to no longer import some of the EU's waste helped spur the plastics ban.

China banned the import of plastic waste last year, causing other south east Asian countries to become new destinations. The Philippines, complaining of being treated like a dumpsite by wealthier nations, shipped 69 containers of what its officials called illegally transported garbage back to Canada in May.

The responsibility for waste is everyones responsibility, so when you hire a skip from us at Shefford Skip Hire, please ask us for any hints or tips for your own recycling campaign and help to keep Shefford cleaner.
